About Our Founder
As a survivor of rape at the hands of someone I dated in college, I began a career in violence prevention. I loved every moment of my work, no matter how daunting or difficult. I had done a good deal of healing through counseling and support groups, and was on my way to building back the pieces of life I had lost to rape.
On April 20-21, 2007, I was drugged and taken to the home of a man I did not know and was raped. I feared for my life and was treated less than human for hours. In those moments I felt alone and afraid. But I survived and the survival was lonely and painful. Every day I worked to heal my life, and every day I was reminded of how little healing and support is out there for survivors. As I pieced together my healing journey, I began to think that there had to be more for all survivors of sexual and domestic violence.
In September 2009, I founded Voices, Inc. in the hope of providing survivors with options for healing. Surviving is not easy. It is not linear. It is bumpy, and curvy, and full of light and dark. I believe with my whole heart that surviving and reclaiming your life is possible. It is my hope that survivors will find connection and peace through Voices on their own healing journeys. I believe in a world where everyone is trauma-informed, believes and supports survivors, and is never silenced by violence. Together we can make that vision our reality.
Sincerely,
Melissa Lucchesi
